Teigen’s well-known bulldog Puddy was almost as popular with fans as she is

Losing a beloved pet is absolutely no different than losing a beloved family member — because they are your family. Chrissy Teigen and John Legend just experienced the heartbreaking loss of their bulldog, Puddy, who they loved as part of their family for 10 years.

Teigen announced the news on her Instagram account, and dog lovers everywhere be warned: her tribute will make you ugly cry.

“Today our baby, Puddy, has gone on to the pup heavens,” she captioned a series of sweet photos.

She and John got Puddy when they first started dating, and he’s been part of their family ever since.

“10 years ago, on May 30th, I found the dog that would be there for us through every up, down, new house, new city, new tour, new travel,” she writes. “He welcomed new pups and loved on new babies and new bellies.”

Our family pets are the one constant when everything else just isn’t. Especially throughout the span of a decade. Teigen writes that Puddy was her favorite “taste tester” and that no matter what she needed, he was there for her.

Legend even shared that Puddy was his first dog ever — is there such a thing as sympathy grief? Like sympathy pains, but worse and more soul-crushing? Because we’re feeling it right about now.

“It’s true what they say,” she writes. “We are their entire lives and it is the greatest shame that they can only bless us with a short spark of time in ours.”

I’ve always said I think every pet owner has that one pet they’ll never fully recover from losing. Any animal lover and pet owner loves all their pets immensely, of course. But there’s always that one. Mine was Molly, a lovable and neurotic yellow lab. That dog saw me through my tumultuous college years — running faster than the wind to greet me when I came home for a weekend. During my parents’ even more tumultuous divorce, I somehow winded up with “custody” of Molly. She was my companion through high school, college, multiple jobs and houses. Like Puddy, she was my constant. She kept me going when not much else did — she and I were also well acquainted with face-in-the-fur sobbing.

Losing her five years ago is something I still can’t talk about without crying. It was like losing my family all over again, but worse. I will miss her forever.

There’s honestly nothing more devastating than the feeling of emptiness that swallows you up when you’re sitting in your home without them. “I always knew I would lose a piece of me when he left us,” Teigen writes.

“I feel the hole now. I will love you forever, my boy. My heart aches. Thank you so much for everything, everything.”
